Banking for Foreigners in Japan

HSBC Bank--one of Britain's largest banks--has been active in Japan for years but has recently started promoting banking services to foreigners and expats living in Japan. The Japanese banking system can be confusing (to say the least) to foreigners, unless one speaks, reads, and writes Japanese and understands Japanese banking...idiosyncrasies.

With the launch of HSBC Premier, HSBC seems to be capitalizing on those idiosyncrasies, pledging to bring Western-style banking services and products to Japan. It's been tried before--notably by CitiBank who was forced to cease consumer banking operations--so who knows how it will go.

But if you're a Westerner living in Japan and looking for banking and investment options, you now have one more choice at least.
