I just read your article on Japan Todays web site. This is the first time that any one has brought my exact thoughts and feelins to the table. I have written small articles (closer to comments really) to major papers that speak about the Yasukuni shrine. I believe that you have hit that situation almost perfectly on the head. I feal that it is time for asia in general to wake up to the current global climate. No other country suffered as greatly as Japan in order to surrender in the 20th century. I also think that people need to know that the climate of actions in war has changed. It is no longer ok to put POW's to slave labor, but at the time it was. I dont see Germany being slammed every day about thier involvement in the war (given lots of bad press had) mabey that is in part that Hitler was branded the bad guy and a lot of Germany was "just along for the ride". I think Germany benefited from the death of Hitler in that Aspect. But not digress from my previous thought... I think that When Japan started paying reperations and signed a treaty and became an allie that they started to evolve. I hope that people can start seeing this. I am a Japanese man together with a Korean woman. I couldnt tell you how many times I get criticised even punched or plain ignored for my heritage in Korea and the States. I try to let people know that Japan is sorry for their past, and has made great steps in the last 50 years to letting the globe know this. I hope that more writers will start to publicly fight the current badgering and smearing of Japan.

I'm starting to believe that China and Korea teach hatred towards Japan because it serves their purpose. Maybe it creates more "nationalism" where the governments can more easily sway their populations, for example, recently in China their were several protests against the Japanese history books. Are the Chinese history books accurate in depicting their takeover of Tibet? There is something to be said about keeping populations misinformed, not educating them therefor making them easier to control. Even here in the U.S. we are given misinformation thru the media to sway our thinking.

It must serve the national interest of a country to misinform the people, or at least is a policy to "control" citizens somehow. Or maybe to re-direct their probems to an external source instead of focusing on internal/domestic issues.

The other purpose keeping the hatred alive is it may give the feeling of moral superiority. This can be used to justify actions against Japan. Maybe a partial takeover of invested assets? Japan has given millions to Korea and China for development yet nothing is said to it's citizens about this.

Another possibity is a deep jealously of how much Japan was able to rise out of the ashes of WWII and become an economic power. This is an admirable feat, considering Japan has almost no natural resources and is an island nation.

On the flip side, the U.S. is on good terms with Germany, Italy, and Japan. All were enemies during WWII. We are now patching up relations with Vietman, and currently cultivating relations with India (who was closer to the USSR during the Cold War). The U.S. doesn't sow the seeds of hatred to it's younger generation, we forgive and look to our future, which means moving on, and forward.
